RANZCOG welcomes support for parents grieving miscarriage or stillbirth

24 June 2021

The peak body for obstetrics and gynaecology and women’s health in Australia and New Zealand welcomes moves in Australia to support parents grieving miscarriage or stillbirth.

Today, the Federal Government will introduce legislation that will allow parents who suffer a miscarriage to be given paid leave. This follows the NSW Government’s announcement on Tuesday 22 June that its 2021-22 Budget will support public sector employees with paid special miscarriage and pre-term birth leave.

These developments also follow RANZCOG’s recent Women’s Health Summit in Canberra, where delegates overwhelming called for the introduction of paid leave for stillbirth or miscarriage.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) President Dr Vijay Roach said: “People who experience stillbirth, or miscarriage, deserve support, compassion, time to grieve, and acknowledgement of the significance of their loss.”
