The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG, the College) has today published its Management of Vasomotor and Genitourinary Symptoms of Menopause (C-Gyn 9) guideline, designed to support clinicians in assessing and treating two of the most common symptom groups experienced during this significant life transition.
An evidence-based tool for consistency in care
Menopause is an area of women’s healthcare with conflicted messaging and considerable media and commercial interest. This new guideline and associated resources were created to provide a reliable, evidence-based resource to support consistency in care and inform shared decision-making about treatment options.
This clinical resource offers specialists, GPs and other primary care clinicians a robust reference for providing care to women with vasomotor and/or genitourinary menopausal symptoms.
Symptoms in focus
Menopause can bring a range of symptoms, and the severity and duration can vary widely. RANZCOG’s C-Gyn 9 guideline focuses on two of the most common groups:
- Vasomotor symptoms: Including hot flushes and night sweats, experienced by many women around menopause
- Genitourinary symptoms: Including dryness of the vagina and vulva, burning, irritation, discomfort or pain with sex, and urinary changes such as urgency, pain or recurrent urinary tract infections
While C-Gyn 9 does not seek to address every aspect of menopause care, within its defined scope of vasomotor and genitourinary symptoms it represents a robust, evidence-based clinical resource.
The College looks forward to its involvement in the development of the comprehensive national guidelines for perimenopause and menopause, funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government.
Supporting resources
To assist with integrating this guideline into everyday practice, RANZCOG has released three accompanying resources:
- A quick reference guide for clinicians, including prescribing tables
- A patient information pamphlet, to assist consumers with understanding their available treatment options and informed decision-making
- A podcast episode which distils key takeaways from the guideline in an accessible format
