Celebrating our past

15 February 2021

Ahead of the College’s historic move from Albert Street to Bowen Crescent in 2021, a farewell to College House will be held in March.

The event, to be held on 18 March*, will be a chance to say goodbye and pay tribute to 254-260 Albert Street, East Melbourne – a cornerstone of RANZCOG’s identity and history for nearly 38 years.

College House

RANZCOG was formed on 23 October 1998, with the amalgamation of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RACOG) and the Royal New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RNZCOG).

Initially the College occupied premises at ‘Old’ College House, 8 Latrobe Street, Melbourne, Victoria. In 1983 the College moved to its current headquarters at 254 Albert Street, East Melbourne. College House was built in 1873. An additional wing, which includes the Frank Forster Library, was added in 1988. The building at 260 Albert Street was purchased in 1991 and the buildings underwent further renovations in 1997.

In June 2020, after a long search for suitable premises, the College announced it had purchased 1 Bowen Crescent – a property complete with all the elements to take RANZCOG into the next successful chapter in its journey.

Farewell Albert Street

The evening will be attended by members and trainees, donors, guests and friends of the College; an opportunity to share memories and salute the vision of the founding Fellows who purchased Albert Street all those years ago.

Being mindful of the health and safety of members, trainees, staff, and guests, RANZCOG will hold the farewell event in compliance with the guidelines set by the Victorian State Government. As a result, the event will be open to Victorian members and, trainees only. We would have very much loved to have the opportunity to invite everyone across Australia and New Zealand to this special event; however, due to ongoing restrictions and border closure this is not possible. We appreciate the understanding of our trainees and members across Australia and New Zealand.

An official invitation will be sent to Victorian members shorty. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]

Paying tribute

With College House steeped in history and tradition which we are all very proud of, RANZCOG looks forward to sharing a number of these stories over the next couple of weeks. Please look out for them in future issues of Connect.

* This event is subject to the Victorian Government’s public health orders.
