Termination of pregnancy is a right for every woman

21 June 2019

Media Statement

The College has been made aware of comments by the Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton alleging that refugees on Nauru are making false claims of rape and request for termination of pregnancy. RANZCOG does not engage in political commentary but, as experts in women’s health in Australia and New Zealand, we reassert our strongly-held position that all people, irrespective of their nationality or citizenship status, should be offered appropriate medical assessment and care. In Australia, allegation of rape is a legal matter. However, assessment of a woman who alleges rape is a medical matter and request for termination of pregnancy is a right for every woman. Furthermore, the decision as to whether or not to have a termination, or to continue the pregnancy, is multifactorial and is between a woman and her medical care provider.
