Support for the Urgent Medical Treatment Bill from Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

03 December 2018

Media Statement

RANZCOG supports the Urgent Medical Treatment Bill introduced in Parliament today by Professor Kerryn Phelps and the crossbench. This Bill seeks to allow critically ill men, women and children on Manus and Nauru access to appropriate medical treatment, a position RANZCOG continues to advocate for.

Should the Bill be passed it will streamline urgent medical transfer for adults to Australia at the recommendation of two doctors, and require the immediate transfer of the remaining children and their families on Manus and Nauru.

“Every person should have access to quality medical care when it is available and as clinicians we have a duty to uphold this basic human right”, said RANZCOG President Dr Vijay Roach.
