Focusing on Gender Equity and Diversity

12 April 2019

Over the last two decades, RANZCOG has experienced a significant increase in female representation; however, there remains variation at a senior leadership level, particularly at the Board. The current RANZCOG Council is 50% female and there is near gender parity across most College committees.

In response to heightened awareness of gender inequities and bias experienced by RANZCOG members, a Gender Equity and Diversity Working Group (GEDWG) was established in November 2018. This group is comprised of a cross-section of RANZCOG members and is tasked with identifying and addressing existing gaps in College policy and processes that hinder equitable, inclusive and diverse ways of engaging with, being a part of and contributing to the College.

Currently 83% of RANZCOG trainees and 50% of RANZCOG Fellows are female with male representation declining among RANZCOG trainees. There is a risk that male medical students and prevocational doctors are viewing the specialty as a female led specialty and not considering O&G as a career option. This is problematic and has potential workforce implications.

RANZCOG Board recognises that having an organisation that is composed of men and women with the relevant blend of differing skills, experience, perspectives, age and cultures leads to more opportunities for effective leadership, stronger decision-making and better outcomes for our patients.
