About the program

The RANZCOG Associate Training Program (Procedural) (PTP) builds on the knowledge and skills developed through the Certificate of Women’s Health program.

It is intended for medical practitioners who wish to gain skills in obstetrics and gynaecology to a level that will enable them to safely undertake non-complex deliveries and perform basic gynaecological procedures.

The program runs for a timeframe of six (6) months minimum to two (2) years maximum to complete the program logbook and examination requirements. Four (4) years if completing multiple programs concurrently.

Eligibility

You must be:
 

  • Enrolled or completed the CWH (and maintained membership).
  • In your second or subsequent postgraduate year (PGY2).
  • Commencing or currently undertaking a hospital appointment at a RANZCOG-approved training site.

Training requirements

To receive the RANZCOG Associate Training Program (Procedural), you must satisfactorily complete all requirements outlined below within two years of commencement of training, or within four years if completing two or more programs simultaneously.

Trainees will be provided with access to the College’s training platform Integrate, a portal that allows trainees to access, record and submit their course requirements online.

In-training Skills Log

The in-training skills log is aligned with the Associate Training Program (Procedural) curricula based on the five modules below.

PTP 1 – Basic Skills

  • Quality assurance methodology and practice
  • Documentation and coding practices

PTP 2 – Antenatal Care

  • Complications in pregnancy
  • Pregnancy-induced disorders
  • Pregnancy in women with pre-existing medical conditions

PTP 3 – Labour

  • Normal labour and delivery
  • Complications in labour

PTP 4 – Postnatal and Neonatal Care

  • Examination of a neonate
  • Jaundice in a neonate
  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • Problems of the puerperium

PTP 5 – Procedural Gynaecology

  • Termination of pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Insertion and removal of intra-uterine devices (IUDs)

Training Experience Log

≥70 Antenatal Consultations (in addition to the CWH consultations)
≥70 Gynaecological Consultations (in addition to the CWH consultations)

Workplace-Based Assessments (WBAs)

WBAs evaluate your clinical skills during a normal working day. During a patient encounter or procedure, your performance will be assessed against the standards described for each criterion.

You may use the assessment of these skills as a formative process prior to having a final satisfactory summative sign-off.

  • Episiotomy/Vaginal/Perineal Tear Repair
  • Examination of a Neonate
  • Labour and Delivery
  • Low Instrumental Delivery

Clinical Procedures Log

≥ 25 Personally conduct management of labour and vaginal deliveries, which must include ≥ 5 instrumental vaginal births
≥ 10 Personally conduct management of post-partum haemorrhage
≥ 10 Personally conduct management of first-trimester miscarriage
≥ 3 Personally conduct management of retained placenta
≥ 10 Performances of dilatation and curettage
≥ 5 Personally conduct episiotomies
≥ 7 Personally insert and remove an intra-uterine device, which must include ≥ 4 in outpatient setting without general anaesthetic

Workshops

  • Management of obstetric emergencies
  • CPR of a pregnant woman
  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • Fetal Surveillance Education Program (FSEP)
  • Face-to-face workshop is mandatory for trainees commencing after 1 January 2022
  • Certificate of attendance and FSEP test score letter must be submitted with your logbook
  • The FSEP assessment is undertaken on completion of the FSEP program and trainees must score >76% (level 3)

Completion of Training

Training is complete once the program examination and logbook requirements have been met, and you have been formally approved by the Conjoint Committee for Associate Procedural Training (CCAPT).

Formal approval takes place six times a year in the following months: February, April, June, August, October, and December.

Training and examination fees are payable in Australian dollars (AUD), and are not subject to Australian GST.

CPD and Membership fees

CPD fees are applicable on completion of the PTP and you become an Associate (Procedural) Member. Your annual subscription will be pro-rata for your first year based on the date of completion.
