Access RANZCOG’s resources to support your retirement journey: Acquire
In recognition of the skills and knowledge that senior Fellows possess and to encourage continued involvement in medical education, surgical assisting and other relevant areas through a reduced scope of practice, the College has introduced a membership category of Semi-retired Fellow.
This category of membership offers a reduced annual subscription for Fellows approaching the end of their career.
You may be eligible for semi-retired status if you meet the following criteria:
- Are a current financial member of RANZCOG.
- Earn an annual, pre-tax medical income of not more than AUD$150,000 or NZD$162,000 (or equivalent).
- Are actively practising as a Fellow of RANZCOG (see College Statement for exceptions).
Semi-retired Fellows are held to the same CPD requirements as Fellows and must complete their Annual Renewal.
Apply
Fellows wishing to access the Semi-retired Fellow subscription rate can refer to the College statement on Semi-retired RANZCOG Fellow (WPI 24) for details of the scope of practice and declaration form. To apply, please complete the Semi-retired Fellows Reduced Subscription Application Form.
Following acceptance of your application, a confirmation of the subscription to be paid will then be forwarded to you.
Please note: Conversion to ‘semi-retired’ category is only available at the time of renewal of annual membership, and must be declared on an annual basis.
You may be eligible to become a Retired Fellow if you are completely and permanently retired from practice as a specialist obstetrician and/or gynaecologist, no longer registered as a medical practitioner in Australia and/or New Zealand, and no longer acting as an expert witness in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology, except in cases:
- For which you have already provided an opinion prior to the date of signing this Confirmation of Retirement; and
- Which deal with medical practices current during any time you were in active practice as a specialist obstetrician and/or gynaecologist and prior to signing the Confirmation of Retirement.
As a retired Fellow, you are no longer required to complete CPD or annual renewal. Retired Fellows may use the post-nominal FRANZCOG (ret).
Steps to Retirement
There are several steps required for you to complete your retirement:
- Complete the RANZCOG Retirement Declaration form.
- Contact the Medical Board of Australia or the Medical Council of New Zealand to change your registration status.
- When a practice closes, patient medical records are to be managed in accordance to legal, regulatory and professional standards. This can encompass a range of data including consultation notes, correspondence, referrals, investigations and results, photographs, video footage and appointment records. The College guidelines for patient record management on the discontinuation of practice will provide detailed information.
Continue to stay informed about women’s health. As a retired Fellow you will still receive the following from the College:
- Four issues of O&G Magazine per year (as well as online access)
- Six issues of ANZJOG per year (as well as online access)
- Connect, our weekly members-only newsletter
- The AOFOG Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research, if you have elected to receive this

Re-entry for Fellows
The Membership Review Policy and Procedure has been developed to support our vision of ‘excellence in women’s health’ by assisting RANZCOG Fellows reinstate their membership.
The application for reinstatement or re-entry will be assessed per each individual case and will consider the period since they have been removed from the register and their recency of practice.
Applicants who have been removed for over 12 months must be able to show evidence of their recency of practice.
Initiate re-entry
After reading the Membership Review Policy and Procedure to identify which pathway relates to your re-entry to Fellowship, complete the relevant online form to initiate the process (the form includes payment of the non-refundable Fellowship review application fee).
Applicants who have not practised for over thirty-six months will have to submit a copy of the plan for professional development and re-entry to practice to be able to meet regulatory requirements.

Associates (Procedural) retirement options

Use the information below to assist your transition from active clinical practice to retirement.
In recognition of the skills and knowledge that senior Associates (Procedural) possess and to encourage continued involvement in medical education and other relevant areas through a reduced scope of practice, the College has introduced a membership category of Semi-retired Associates (Procedural).
This category of membership offers a reduced annual subscription for Associates (Procedural) approaching the end of their career.
You may be eligible for semi-retired status if you meet the following criteria:
- Are a current financial member of RANZCOG.
- Have been an Associate (Procedural) member for 20 years or longer.
- Earn an annual, pre-tax medical income of not more than AUD$150,000 (NZD$162,000) or equivalent.
Semi-retired Associates (Procedural) are held to the same CPD requirements as Associates (Procedural) and must complete their Annual Renewal requirements. Semi-retired reductions must be applied for on an annual basis.

Associates (Procedural) wishing to access the Semi-retired Associate (Procedural) subscription rate can complete the Semi-Retired Associates (Procedural) Reduced Subscription Application Form.

As a Retired Associate (Procedural) member, you are no longer required to complete CPD or annual renewal.
- Retired Associates (Procedural) may use the post-nominal ARANZCOG (P) (ret).
- Retired Associates (Advanced Procedural) may use the post-nominal ARANZCOG (Adv. P) (ret).

Mental Health and Wellbeing through Retirement
For many doctors, retiring can be challenging, with ongoing financial commitments, sensing a loss of purpose, or a concern about a lack of intellectual stimulation.
Reinstatement for Associates (Procedural) and Certificants
The Membership Review Policy and Procedure applies to previously-registered RANZCOG Certificants or Associates (Procedural or Advanced Procedural) who are currently practising and would like to be reinstated to the Register.
A RANZCOG Certificant or Associate (Procedural or Advanced Procedural) may have been removed from the register for a variety of reasons such as:
- Resigned or removed from the Register due to unfinancial status.
- Resigned or removed from the Register due to non-completion of women’s reproductive health requirements.
- No longer practicing intrapartum care/shared care.
- Travelling/working overseas for a period of time
