Progressing to Advanced Training

To apply to progress to Advanced Training, Trainees must have completed:

  • 184 weeks of Basic Training,
  • Passed both written and oral examinations, and
  • Completed all training requirements.

Please ensure your training supervisor/ITP coordinator is aware if you are having issues completing your Basic Training requirements to progress to Advanced Training. They may be able to offer advice and additional opportunities to complete the requirements to avoid losing credit for Advanced Training Time.

Advanced training requirements

For trainees who commenced from 2025.

Please refer to your “FRANZCOG requirement summary” page on My.RANZCOG for due dates specific to your commencement date and elected Advanced Training Module.

Planning your ATP

Prior to commencing Advanced Training, you must submit your Advanced Training Pathway (ATP) requirements for prospective approval via My.RANZCOG.

As part of the prospective approval process, the College will confirm that your training site can provide sufficient clinical experience to support your Advanced Training program.

Trainees undertaking the Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology Advanced Training Pathway must complete the following ATMs:

  • Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology ATP
  • Generalist Obstetrics ATM
  • Generalist Gynaecology ATM

Trainees are expected to complete the training and assessment requirements for the Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology ATP over 92 weeks (FTE) of satisfactorily completed prospectively approved Advanced Training. These ATMs may be undertaken concurrently; estimated lengths of each ATM are provided in the curriculum document.

Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology Advanced Training Pathway

Trainees undertaking the Advanced Obstetrics Advanced Training Pathway must complete the following ATMs:

  • Essentials Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills ATM
  • Advanced Obstetrics ATM

Trainees are expected to complete the training and assessment requirements for the Advanced Obstetrics ATP over 92 weeks (FTE) of satisfactorily completed prospectively approved Advanced Training, These ATMs may be undertaken concurrently, estimated lengths of each ATM are provided in the curriculum document.

Advanced Obstetrics Advanced Training Pathway

Mandatory modules

Trainees undertaking the Sexual and Reproductive Health Advanced Training Pathway must complete the following ATMs:

  • Essential Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills Advanced Training Module (ATM)
  • Contraception ATM
  • Medical and Surgical Abortion ATM
  • Sexual Health (eLearning Module) ATM

Elective modules

Mandatory requirement to complete minimum of two:

  • Menopause ATM
  • Care of Vulvovaginal Conditions ATM
  • Acute Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy ATM
  • Colposcopy ATM
  • Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology ATM

Trainees are expected to complete the training and assessment requirements for the Sexual and Reproductive Health ATP over 92 weeks (FTE) of satisfactorily completed prospectively approved Advanced Training. These ATMs may be undertaken concurrently; estimated lengths of each ATM are provided in the curriculum document.

Sexual and Reproductive Health Advanced Training Pathway

Rural Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Advanced Training Pathway is a funded project under the Department of Health and Aged Care, Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings (FATES).

Applications for this pathway for 2025 intake are now closed.

Trainees undertaking the Rural Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist ATP must complete the following ATMs:

  • Essentials Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills ATM
  • Rural Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist ATM

Trainees are expected to complete the training and assessment requirements for the Rural Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist ATP over 92 weeks (FTE) of satisfactorily completed prospectively approved Advanced Training. These ATMs may be undertaken concurrently; estimated lengths of each ATM are provided in the curriculum document.

Rural Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist Advanced Training Pathway

Trainees undertaking the Academic pathway must complete the following ATMs:

  • Essential Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills ATM
  • Medical Education Special Interest Module (SIM)

Trainees are expected to complete the training and assessment requirements for the Academic ATP over 92 weeks (FTE) of satisfactorily completed prospectively approved Advanced Training. To note 46 Weeks can be credited by virtue of completing the PHD. These ATMs may be undertaken concurrently; estimated lengths of each ATM are provided in the curriculum document.

To undertake the academic pathway, trainees must be approved under the academic stream.

Essential Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills ATM
Medical Education Special Interest Module (SIM)

Trainees undertaking the Subspecialty training program must complete the Essential Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills Advanced Training Module (ATM).

To undertake the subspecialist pathway, trainees must be enrolled in a RANZCOG-approved subspecialty training program.

The College also offers a suite of optional special-interest Advanced Training Modules (SIMs), as outlined below.

Please note: it is advisable not to undertake more than two ATMs concurrently during the training period.

Trainees undertaking the Generalist Obstetrics and Gynaecology Pathway​ must complete the Generalist Obstetrics ATM and Generalist Gynaecology ATM.

These ATMs may be completed concurrently over a minimum of 46 weeks, or individually over a minimum of 23 weeks per module.

Trainees undertaking the Subspecialist pathway prior to Fellowship must complete one of the following options:

  • Essential Obstetrics and Gynaecology Skills ATM, concurrently with a minimum of 46 weeks of satisfactorily assessed Subspecialty training, or
  • Generalist Obstetrics ATM and Generalist Gynaecology ATM, concurrently over a minimum of 23 weeks, prior to commencing Subspecialist training, plus a minimum of 23 weeks of satisfactorily assessed Subspecialty training

Completion and sign-off

The process of Advanced Training Pathway (ATP) completion and sign-off is as follows:

Step 1. Training

Complete the ATP requirements within the designated timeframe

Step 2. Completion

Submit the ATP Completion Form via My.RANZCOG (Additional Requirements dashboard), including a signature from your Training Supervisor and Head of Department
