RANZCOG offers a number of scholarships and fellowships to support workforce development in obstetrics and gynaecology through networking, training, education and research between colleagues across our region and globally.

RANZCOG Regional & New Zealand Committee Pacific Scholarships Program


Selection: Awardees nominated by Pacific medical schools (not available for self-application)
Number of scholarships: Up to 6 scholarships per year

The RANZCOG Regional and New Zealand Committee Pacific Scholarship Program provides O&G trainees and young O&G specialists in the Pacific with an opportunity for interaction, networking, professional support and discussion on current topics in O&G, through a scholarship to attend a RANZCOG CPD opportunity in Australia or New Zealand.  
 
The scholarships are targeted to Master of Medicine (O&G) trainees and recent Master of Medicine (O&G) graduates from the Pacific medical schools with which RANZCOG has professional involvement in the training program:

  • University of Papua New Guinea School of Health and Medical Sciences (UPNG SMHS)
  • Fiji National University College of Medical, Nursing and Health Sciences (FNU CMNHS).

RANZCOG CPD Program Associate Membership Scholarship to attend the RANZCOG ASM

Selection: Call for applications from Associate Members occurs 6–9 months prior to each ASM

The RANZCOG continuing professional development (CPD) Program for Pacific O&G Specialists offers one scholarship to each Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) to an Associate Member from the Pacific. This scholarship is advertised to Associate Members 6–9 months prior to each ASM scholarship.
 

RANZCOG Brian Spurrett Fellowships

More information

The RANZCOG Women's Health Foundation provides the Brian Spurrett Fellowship in memory of Professor Brian Spurrett, a leader in building professional relationships between RANZCOG and the Pacific. The Brian Spurrett Fellowships, available since 2004, support doctors and nurses actively working in reproductive health in the Pacific, to participate in continuing professional development.
 
Guidelines for the Brian Spurrett Fellowships are currently being updated. More information about these Fellowships will be available in early 2020.
 

RANZCOG Academic O&G Fellowships for medical schools in University of Papua New Guinea and Fiji National University

Selection: Awardees nominated by Pacific medical schools (not available for self-application)
Number of scholarships: Discretionary
Adjudicator: University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and Fiji National University (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS)

RANZCOG Shan S Ratnam Young Gynaecologist Award (YGA)

Selection: RANZCOG Fellows and Associate Members under 40 are eligible to apply for the YGA.
Number of scholarships: offered in conjunction with the Asia and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOFOG) Congress, held every two years.
Adjudicator: RANZCOG
Nomination period: More information about applying for the YGA 2021 will be made available by the middle of 2020.
 

Awards for Best Candidates in the O&G examinations conducted in the medical schools in University of Papua New Guinea and Fiji National University

Selection: Awardees nominated by Pacific medical schools (not available for self-application)
Number of scholarships:  2 per year
Adjudicator: University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and Fiji National University (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS)
Nomination period: Following FNU and UPNG examinations, with award made the following year

For more than 20 years, RANZCOG has provided awards to the Best Candidates in the Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) examination and Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology examination at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), and to the Best Candidate in the Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) examination at the Fiji National University (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS). The award includes a book prize and certificate. Acknowledgement is made to Bayer Australia Limited (Bayer) for sponsorship of these awards, known as the RANZCOG/Bayer awards.

More information

One of the ways RANZCOG promotes the specialty of obstetrics and gynaecology amongst medical students is through the Women’s Health Award. Established in 2005, the $500 Award is offered on an annual basis to all medical schools in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea in recognition of an outstanding obstetrics and gynaecology medical student.
