Requirements for Substantially Comparable SIMGs

SIMG applicants assessed at interview as Substantially Comparable to an Australian or New Zealand trained specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology may be required to undertake a period of supervised specialist practice of up to twelve months. The duration of this period of oversight is stipulated by the SIMG Assessment Committee. An equivalent number of months of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities as an Educational Affiliate of the College must be completed concurrently.

For a full description of requirements, you should refer to Section E1.5 of the RANZCOG Regulations.

Supervised Practice under Oversight (Supervision)

Prospective Approval

In order to commence a supervised specialist practice you must identify a Fellow of the College who is prepared to act as a Supervisor of your oversight, and complete an application. For a Substantially Comparable Position with oversight the completed form should be submitted to College House for approval prior to commencing the period of oversight.

Please submit forms to the SIMG team by emailing [email protected].

Review of Performance

Once working in an approved post, formative reports are required every three months throughout the period of oversight. These reports should be completed by your Supervisor in discussion with you. They will be based upon discussions with key consultants, medical and support staff who have worked with you.

The completed report should be signed and dated by you and your Supervisor, and submitted to the SIMG office. The SIMG office will then arrange for the report to be signed by the SIMG Assessment Committee Chair. A copy of the signed report will be returned to you.

Please submit forms to the SIMG team by emailing [email protected].

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Throughout your period of supervision you must undertake an equivalent number of months of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities as an Educational Affiliate of the College.

For more information regarding the CPD requirements, please contact the Continuing Professional Development team by emailing [email protected].

Applying for Fellowship

Applications for Fellowship are considered by the SIMG Assessment Committee six times per year (approximately every two months). Applications for Fellowship that have been approved by the SIMG Assessment Committee will be recommended to the RANZCOG Board for endorsement.

The SIMG office will contact you approximately six weeks prior to the conclusion of your period of oversight. You will be asked to provide the names and contact details of eight to ten individuals with whom you have worked in a professional capacity. Following confirmation from your supervisor that the nominees are appropriate and together cover a range of experience, each of the nominees will be asked to complete feedback on your performance. This feedback will be considered by the SIMG Assessment Committee when it reviews your application for Fellowship.

You will also receive documents from the SIMG office relating to your application for Fellowship and these should be completed and returned to College House by the specified time. All documentation must be finalised by the deadline for the consideration of the SIMG Assessment Committee and the RANZCOG Board.
