CPD program-level requirements in Aotearoa New Zealand
The College provides a range of tools and resources to help you navigate the new CPD requirements relating to cultural safety, health inequities, professionalism and ethical practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Cultural safety and health inequities
New Zealand doctors are required to engage in activities that support a cultural safety practice addressing health inequities, and maintaining and developing professionalism and ethical practice. From 1st January 2024, you will be able to track hours spent on these activities from your CPD portal dashboard.
There are no specific numbers of hours that should be allocated to these activities; however, your professional development planning (PDP) and Annual Conversation should consider some of these. Further information about these requirements will be communicated in April 2023 in readiness for the CPD cycle in 2024.
The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) requires doctors to meet cultural safety standards.
Cultural safety focuses on the patient and provides space for patients to be involved in decision-making about their own care, and contribute to the achievement of positive health outcomes and experiences.

MCNZ is dedicated to investigating ways of working together to improve cultural safety. Cultural safety benefits all patients and communities, and has a central role in health equity.

Framework in development

Please note that more information will be made available as this project progresses.
Professionalism and ethical practice
All clinicians have a professional and ethical responsibility to ensure patient safety at all times.
As much as possible, RANZCOG CPD program participants in Aotearoa New Zealand should engage in activities that enhance professionalism and ethical practice.
All participants are strongly encouraged to include these activities in their Professional Development Plan (PDP) for this current cycle. On completing your reflection, it may be helpful to consider the following questions:
Did the activity demonstrate professionalism and ethics?
If not, how could this be achieved in future activities?
What professionalism and ethics elements have you learned through undertaking the activity?
Please note that you should also include these considerations in your structured annual conversation for each CPD cycle.
How can I meet these CPD requirements?
Please note that the College will continue adding to the below lists, in consultation with organisations, healthcare professionals and other individuals with appropriate expertise in Māori health.
Cultural safety and health inequity
Consider the following questions when updating your professional development plan (PDP):
When adding an activity
What cultural safety and health equity elements are embedded into the activity?
When reflecting of an activity
Did the activity demonstrate cultural safety and health equity elements?
If not, how could this be achieved in future activities?
What cultural safety and health equity elements have you learned through undertaking the activity?
