The Role: 

An opportunity has become available for a Registrar – Advanced Trainee (Maternal Fetal Medicine)

to join Gold Coast Health (GCH) where the focus of our 10 000-strong team is on providing world-class health care to over 550,000 people living in the Gold Coast, and northern New South Wales region of Australia.

You will take responsibility for:

  • Providing inpatient and outpatient care by:
  • Assessing patients, determining and instigating appropriate investigations
  • Establishing management plans for patients in consultation with the consultant
  • Ensuring discharge planning commences early in the process of care (inpatients only)
  • Communicating assessment findings, proposed management plans and alternatives to patient and carers and seek consent
  • Gathering input from appropriate multidisciplinary teams for patients ongoing clinical care
  • Attending tutorials, participating and presenting at grand rounds, attending compulsory courses, and participating in on-the-job training in order to meet college requirements
  • Acting as a role model to residents and interns by providing on the job guidance and direction to and become involved in prevocational educational programs

Requirements for the role:

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification (MBBS or equivalent) and registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Certified copies of relevant qualification and registration must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties
  • It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and hepatitis B
  • Evidence of competency in speaking and communicating in English as demonstrated by having completed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination and achieving a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components may be necessary

Salary information: 

  • Temporary full time or temporary part time (12 months, hours negotiable)
  • Base salary ranging from $4243.60 - $4920.10 per fortnight, $55.83 - $64.73 per hour
  • Up to 12.75% employer superannuation contribution
  • 5% leave loading

Gold Coast University Hospital is excited to offer a Senior Registrar position for 2020.


Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a busy tertiary unit with over 5000 obstetric deliveries annually. Training at our institution allows exposure to general obstetrics and gynaecology, advanced laparoscopy and subspecialties including gynaecology oncology, urogynaecology and maternal fetal medicine.


  • General gynaecology advanced training module – consolidated gynaecology exposure including both urogynaecology and advanced laparoscopic
  • General obstetrics advanced training – tertiary obstetrics exposure
  • Colposcopy and office hysteroscopy

The successful candidate will:

  • provide clinical care under supervision and acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to satisfy relevant specialist college and medical board requirements in order to practice as a specialist
  • Provide inpatient and outpatient care by;
  • Assessing patients, determining and instigating appropriate investigations;
  • Establish management plan for patients in consultation with the consultant;
  • Where appropriate, ensure discharge planning commences early in the process of care (inpatients only);
  • Communicate assessment findings, proposed management plans and alternatives to patient and carers and seek consent;
  • Gather input from appropriate multidisciplinary team for patients ongoing clinical care;
  • Continually monitor and review patient progress and adjust the management plan when necessary; and
  • Ensure appropriate and timely communication to the General Practitioner, other health care providers and carers to ensure ongoing patient care post hospital stay.
  • Attend tutorials, participate and present at grand rounds, attend compulsory courses, and participate in on-the-job training in order to meet college requirements and develop clinical knowledge and skills.

Shepparton Women’s Health Centre is a one-stop centre of excellence to manage all women’s health issues. It offers a range of expert health practitioners and services to deliver both curative as well as preventative health care.


Currently, there are 3 obstetricians / gynaecologists, visiting specialists such as a uro-gynaecologist and laparoscopic specialist, a physiotherapist specialising in women’s health, general practitioners, practice nurses, a psychologist and a general surgeon.


The gynaecological practice has a wide-ranging referral base and involves a comprehensive selection of every possible gynaecological clinical presentation, as well as extensive operating, both private and public.


The trainee will have their own fully equipped room for independent consulting, with access to supervision/consultation. There will be ample opportunity for office gynaecological procedures, including IUD insertions, colposcopies, vulvoscopies, and ultrasound examinations, with or without supervision depending on the level of expertise.   It is an excellent position for 5th or 6th year trainees wishing to expand their gynaecological experience and operating skills. Independence will be encouraged, without sacrificing support.


Operating takes place 1-2 days per week at Kyabram District Health Services and 0.5-1 day per week at Shepparton Private Hospital.


Procedures performed in both hospitals include a wide range of gynaecological procedures, such as hysterectomies laparoscopic/vaginal/abdominal, advanced laparoscopic surgery (adnex surgery and treatment of extensive endometriosis), prolapse surgery, hysteroscopies, endometrial ablation, incontinence procedures, sterilisations, LLETZ procedures, and cone biopsies.


If more experience in obstetrics is required separate arrangements will be made.

ITP Registrar
Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Victoria

A recent successful reaccreditation visit in June 2019  has resulted in Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Victoria being awarded accreditation for an ITP trainee in 2020. We are also one trainee short at present until February 2020.

This is a rural attachment as part of your training  but non accredited registrars may also apply .

We have a memorandum of understanding with  Royal Women's Hospital and have adopted  Royal Women's Hospital guidelines for clinical practice.


We do offer extensive gynaecological experience for trainees as well as a busy high risk obstetric unit. Rural and regional health offers many additional challenges that test the competencies and resilience of us all .

We have  made significant additions to our  O and G consultant staffing recently ,improved our education program and feel that a trainee would greatly benefit from an appointment in our unit.
