Tighter regulations to be applied to painkillers containing codeine

04 May 2017

The Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges supports the decision made by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to change access to painkillers containing codeine to prescription only.

Evidence shows that access to codeine-based products is not safe. Medications sold over the counter, or through pharmacies, should be substantially safe and not subject to abuse and the Council is in full support of tighter regulations.

From February 2018, Australia will join the United States, Japan and most European countries who have already introduced extra regulations regarding codeine-based products.
