Launceston hosts the RANZCOG 2016 Tasmanian/Victorian Scientific Meeting for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – O&G: The New Generation

26 February 2016

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) will be holding their annual conference over the weekend in Launceston, Tasmania.

Attracting over 150 practising obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives, medical students and trainees, the theme of the meeting is the Practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in a New Age.

“We will be focusing on where the challenges for both metropolitan and regional practitioners committed to women’s health has changed focus from the purely medical to include the sociodeterminants of health,” according to Associate Professor Amanda Dennis, Convenor of the RANZCOG 2016 Tasmanian/Victorian Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).

“It is a sobering thought that in this era maternal death is more likely to occur from suicide or drug overdose or intimate partner assault than pre‐eclampsia,” said A/Prof Dennis.

One of the debates to attract a lot of interest and discussion among the delegates will be on pregnancy and parenting during specialist training.

“Just as the demands of the women we serve have changed, so has our workforce. A majority of our trainees are now female and the demands of work life balance has modernised the work patterns and ongoing education needs of practising specialists,” said A/Prof Dennis.

The meeting provides an interesting program including: practical workshops, instructive sessions and scientific research and college project activities. The program focuses on the demands of today’s practice and today’s practitioners. Highlights include sessions on domestic violence; gynaecological genetic screening; perinatal anxiety and depression; substance abuse in pregnancy; obesity and its effects on fertility; and the feminisation of the speciaIty.

EVENT DETAILS: The RANZCOG 2016 Tasmanian/Victorian Scientific Meeting will be held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Launceston, Tasmania from Friday 26 ‐ Sunday 28 February 2016.
