RANZCOG supports the 'Uluru Statement from the Heart'

03 July 2018

Last May, a constitutional convention bringing together over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders culminated in the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’, a call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice in the Australian Constitution and a Makarrata Commission to supervise agreements between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

RANZCOG recognises that health equity for all women, especially those from First Nations communities, begins when fundamental human rights are realised. Given that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are currently the least healthy population in Australia, it is paramount that we build respectful relationships between cultures with trust and collaboration. The President and Board of RANZCOG demonstrate their commitment to health equity by adding their voice of support to the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ and call for a First Nations voice to be present in the Australian Constitution.

If you are you a health professional interested in exploring ways to close the gap in Indigenous women’s health, we also invite you to come along to the RANZCOG 2018 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Health Meeting and explore the theme ‘Turning Tides’ that looks at the ebbs and flows when striving for health equality and equity.
