Partnering for Good Health and Wellbeing for Indigenous Australians

RANZCOG President, Professor Steve Robson, was today present at the signing of an historic Partnership Agreement between Australia’s Specialist Colleges, the Australian Government, and other peak bodies for Indigenous Health.

Present at the meeting was the Prime Minister, the Commonwealth Health Minister, the Minister for Indigenous Health, and the Minister for Rural Health.

The Agreement is a key step towards implementing the Government’s National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2013- 2023.

RANZCOG is committed to closing the gap in health outcomes and life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

“Lifelong health begins in pregnancy,” said Professor Robson.  “For this reason, improving pregnancy care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women is fundamental to closing the gap.”

The first specific clinical point in the Agreement is to improve access to maternity care for Indigenous mothers.

“Mothers are the beating heart of Indigenous communities,” said Professor Robson today.  “Making sure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies are as healthy as possible is the key to lifelong good health.”

“Getting maternity care right is a big job, and will require partnerships.  We will be starting work on this immediately – building partnerships across the whole community.”

All signatories to the Agreement are committed to reducing the current gap in health outcomes and life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
