Health Equity Key for New Zealand Women

08 March 2019

Improved equity and access to women’s health services in New Zealand is a key focus of the New Zealand branch of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) who highlight the direct link between access and positive health outcomes for New Zealand women.

“RANZCOG in NZ is working with health sector stakeholders to reduce health outcome disparities, address maternal mental health, provide equitable access to contraception and give NZ women a voice through advocacy of women’s health issues”, says Dr Celia Devenish, RANZCOG NZ Committee chair.

“A dedicated women’s health resource within the Ministry of Health would go some way towards realising health equity for all women”, says Dr Devenish, adding “women’s health needs are unique - encompassing adolescence, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause”.

On International Women’s Day, with the theme #BalanceforBetter, Dr Devenish believes RANZCOG is on track with its focus to improve health outcomes for Māori women and their babies. RANZCOG has a dedicated Māori Women’s health committee, He Hono Wāhine, providing outreach to Māori doctors and trainees, mandatory cultural competence training, and research support on Māori women's health.

“RANZCOG continues to work collaboratively with health sector stakeholders to realise better health outcomes for all New Zealand women. Improved equity and access to women’s health services, a dedicated women’s health resource within the Ministry of Health and improved health outcomes for Māori women and their babies highlights how RANZCOG is helping women #BalanceforBetter”.
