Media Statement

The College is saddened to report the findings of a recent coronial inquest into the death of RANZCOG trainee, Dr Beata Vandeville in 2013.

NSW deputy state coroner, Derek Lee confirms that the cause of death was acute mixed drug toxicity due to accidental drug overdose. To honour coroner obligations all potential causes of death needed to be explored, including Dr Vandeville’s turbulent relationship with the College.

Dr Vandeville expressed dissatisfaction with the College following numerous failed examination attempts. Vandeville felt she was unfairly treated and unsupported throughout the examination process.

Lee reports, “her unsuccessful results created additional stress for Dr Vandeville, leading to a reduction in the standard of her clinical work, which in turn created further stress that negatively affected her examination performance.”

“I can find no evidence that Dr Vandeville was treated inappropriately in the workplace or, more importantly, that any aspect of her clinical training contributed to her death.”

RANZCOG President Prof Steve Robson says, “first and foremost, the College is concerned with the welfare of its trainees, members and staff and continues to provide the best support available.”

“The loss of Dr Vandeville is a tragedy and our thoughts remain with her family at this time.”
