Award-winning visual artist Deanne Gilson designs stole to be worn by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Fellows

For the first time at an ASM an Indigenous Fellow will wear a stole that features The Birthing Tree. RANZCOG commissioned Deanne Gilson, an award-wining visual artist and Wadawurrung woman, to design a stole for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Fellows to wear with the RANZCOG Gown.

The Birthing Tree

Traditionally, women would go into the cavity of a large tree and prepare for the birthing ceremony to begin. The birthing tree represents women’s business. The roots of the tree are connected to the ground and the top branches connect us to the sky and to our spirit. The cavity has crow eggs to represent children and the continuation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family and culture through them. The blue water binds us all through waterways and the water within our bodies. The tree is a symbol that shows we are one with environment and we need to continue to work with it to survive. The murrnong daisy surrounding tree symbolises traditional and contemporary women’s business. The murrnong was used as a food source, but was almost wiped out through colonisation. There is evidence that it is slowly returning and, therefore, is a symbol of hope and reconciliation.

He Hono Wahine are in discussions about the development of a Maori Indigenous stole.
