Regional Fellows Practice Visit Program

The RANZCOG Regional Fellows Committee invite you to express your interest in receiving a Practice Visit during July to November of 2022 by Thursday 31 March 2022.
To be eligible for a visit, the Visited Fellow must be a RANZCOG Fellow currently working in a regional, rural and/or remote area (Modified Monash Model classification MM 2-7) for the past year. See for classification details.

What is the purpose of a Practice Visit?

  • Collegial peer review of specialists within their work environment to gain an understanding of their performance/competencies and compare themselves against RANZCOG standards, with the aim of improving safety and quality of care.
  • To provide constructive feedback about positive aspects of practice and areas of vulnerability that could be addressed to improve patient care.
  • Detailed, in-depth professional development relevant to the context and setting of the specialist receiving the visit.

What are the benefits of a having a Practice Visit?

  • gain valuable feedback on how your practice is progressing
  • identify areas of vulnerability and reduce risk
  • confidential reporting on your performance
  • view how other practices operate (if you become a visitor)
  • earn CPD hours in the Performance Review and Outcome Measurement domains.

What is involved?

Before the visit takes place, the Fellow will complete:

  • a practice profile questionnaire
  • a self-assessment survey
  • the dispersion and collection of 50 patient satisfaction questionnaires
  • a logbook of the last three months of procedures
  • a memorandum of understanding in relation to the visit.

During the visit, the Fellow will:

  • be interviewed by two peers
  • undergo review of clinical workload, case mix and record keeping
  • be observed carrying out one major and one minor procedure in theatre
  • have their practice surroundings reviewed including equipment and processes such as OHS, record systems in public and private (both practice settings will be reviewed where possible)
  • receive feedback about the visit and initial findings.
The reviewers will also talk to colleagues of the Visited Fellow (which may include significant hospital staff such as Unit Managers in relevant areas together with Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Director of Nursing (DON) and Director of Medical Services (DMS), RANZCOG trainees and other junior staff) about the context of care provided within the organisation and systems issues.

After the visit:

  • The results of the visit will be reviewed confidentially by the Practice Visit Working Group.
  • The Visited Fellow will be provided with a written report outlining positive aspects of their practice and areas of vulnerability with suggestions on practice improvement.

Cost and subsidy:

Practice Visits were initially funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government under the Rural Health and Continuing Education Program which was piloted in 2005 until the last funded visits in 2013. This service has now been established as a self-funded CPD activity available to Regional Fellows.

The cost to an individual Regional Fellow of a visit is $3,500. Visited Fellows who complete the Practice Visit process can claim one years’ worth of CPD hours within the Performance Review Domain and half a years’ worth of CPD hours within the Outcome Measurement Domain of the RANZCOG CPD Framework
