Ultrasound in Labour for Obstetricians, Midwives and Nurses (2.5-Day Course)

Traditionally the assessment and management of labour is based on clinical findings.

The diagnosis of poor progress in labour and decisions regarding the timing and type of assistance required relies on evaluation of cervical dilatation, descent and position of the presenting part.

Ultrasound in active labour is not yet routinely used even though studies have shown that it is more precise and reproducible than clinical examination particularly in assessment of the position of the fetal head.

This program will demonstrate how ultrasound may be a useful adjunct to clinical assessment in the management of a woman and her baby in the labour ward.

The ASCCP Update Course now runs for three days with the first day being an optional half day session on the basics of colposcopy suitable for trainees or early practitioners who would like to refresh their practice of colposcopy. Days 2 & 3 will focus on colposcopic assessment and management, particularly of more complex patients. We are also conscious of our New Zealand colleagues’ requirements and will continue to provide sessions and discussion relevant to the New Zealand cervical screening program.

Gynaecological Ultrasound Symposium: What you need to know

Dr Simon Meagher and his faculty of national and international speakers will cover all aspects of basic training in gynaecological imaging and progress through the intermediate and advanced approach to sonographic and surgical diagnosis of common gynaecological pathologies.

Specific attention will be paid to new technologies including the role of 3D/4D ultrasound, sonohysterography, tubal patency testing with and without oil, and ultrasound assessment of deep infiltrating endometriosis.

We will also address new classifications for myometrial endometrial and adnexnal pathologies and include the current classification system for endometriosis.

Course objectives include (but are not limited to):
  • To understand key anatomical and sonographic landmarks in the routine assessment of the female pelvis
  • To know technical specifications to enable correct abdominal and vaginal transducer selection
  • To provide guidelines on how maximise the value of Doppler technologies including colour Doppler, power Doppler, radiant flow and slowflow
  • To address the basic and advanced approaches to sonographic diagnosis of minor and major gynaecological pathologies
  • To provide a practical outline on the technical aspects of 3D and 4D and summarise its application in routine clinical practice
  • To take an in-depth look at the ultrasound guidelines and classification of cervical, uterine and adnexal pathologies
