Training hospitals

Training hospitals must be able to provide RANZCOG trainees with a range of O&G experiences to develop their skills. All health professionals involved in the training of RANZCOG trainees – and the hospital environment in which they work – play a crucial part in their training.

 

The role of hospitals in the FRANZCOG Training Program

The FRANZCOG Training Program comprises a 184-week (four-year) Core Training Program and a 92-week (two-year) Advanced Training Program. All Core Training and a significant proportion of Advanced Training is conducted in major public teaching hospitals, outer suburban/peripheral, and rural/provincial hospitals across Australia and New Zealand accredited for such training by the College. (Please note that Advanced trainees may elect to undertake training in private settings subject to prospective approval. These private settings do not require RANZCOG accreditation). For the purposes of Core Training, a combination of these different training sites forms a consortium, each known as an Integrated Training Program (ITP). Trainees receive a significant proportion of their Core Training at a single home/base hospital and rotate to other hospitals in that ITP. An ITP would normally comprise at least two sites and will include at least one tertiary hospital and one rural hospital.

Collectively, the participating hospitals must be able to provide RANZCOG trainees with the range of O&G experiences stipulated in the training and assessment requirements. The ITP Coordinators, Training Supervisors, consultants, midwifery staff and other health professionals involved in the training of RANZCOG trainees – and the hospital environment in which they work – play a crucial part in this process.

All sites offering both Core and Advanced Training must be accredited by the College. RANZCOG currently has 102 accredited training sites throughout Australia and New Zealand. For a complete list of all RANZCOG-accredited public hospitals, refer to the FRANZCOG Training Program Handbook.

FRANZCOG Training Program Accreditation Standards

The following standards are considered necessary for the provision of effective training and support for trainees in the FRANZCOG Training Program.

  1. Appointment and support of ITP Coordinators.
  2. Appointment and support of Training Supervisors.
  3. Consultant Involvement with and support for FRANZCOG trainees.
  4. Provision of clinical supervision and experience. 
  5. Provision of structured education programs, teaching sessions and learning opportunities. 
  6. Workplace culture, registrar staffing, safe working hours, leave arrangements and assistance for rural rotations.

This document replaces the previous publication Accreditation of Hospitals in the RANZCOG ITP: Standards and Procedures (November 2006).


Initial Accreditation of Training Sites 

Hospitals wishing to apply for accreditation as a training site for FRANZCOG Training must complete an Application for Accreditation as a Training site in the Core Training Program (Word) demonstrating the site’s capacity to meet RANZCOG accreditation standards. This application must be supported by the relevant Regional Training Accreditation Committee.

An initial site visit is then conducted by RANZCOG. This visit is conducted by a team comprising a RANZCOG Fellow from another training region, a member of the relevant Regional Training Accreditation Committee, a trainee representative and a senior member of RANZCOG staff. The team’s brief is to assess the degree to which the hospital will be able to meet the College’s accreditation standards and guidelines. The visit includes interviews with O&G trainees, the Head of Department, consultants, senior midwifery and nursing staff, and hospital management. In addition, the team attends morning handover and tours the O&G Department’s facilities.

Reaccreditation of training sites


Hospitals are normally reaccredited on a four-yearly cycle. When due for reaccreditation, hospitals are contacted by RANZCOG to arrange a mutually convenient date for a site visit. The composition of the reaccreditation team and the structure of the visit is similar to that for an initial accreditation visit (see PDF below). The team’s objective is to assess the training provided by the relevant site in accordance with RANZCOG’s accreditation standards and guidelines.

In-hospital Credentialing documentation

In response to requests from a number of its accredited Integrated Training Program (ITP) hospitals, RANZCOG has developed standardised in-hospital credentialing documentation for use throughout the ITP in Australia and New Zealand.

The documentation is a risk management tool for documenting assessment of registrars' competence and confidence in core surgical procedures after hours. The documentation should be made available to all relevant consultant and nursing staff. Use of RANZCOG's documentation is not compulsory. Hospitals which have already implemented an appropriate in-hospital credentialing process of their own may continue with their current documentation.

Note: This documentation is distinct from RANZCOG's external documentation for the assessment of registrars' competency in core basic and advanced O&G surgical procedures, which is for RANZCOG assessment purpose.
 


Funding: Specialist Training Program (STP)

The Specialist Training Program (STP) is a funding initiative of the Commonwealth Department of Health (DoH) to establish and support a variety of new training posts in expanded settings. 

The STP includes secondary specialised funding schemes: Private Infrastructure Clinical Supervision (PICS) funding, and the Rural Integrated Training Program (RITP).
