Short-Term Training in a Medical Specialty

Short-term Training (STT) in a Medical Specialty allows International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who have an international specialist O&G qualification or who are close to completing their specialist training overseas to access training in obstetrics and gynaecology in short-term positions in Australian hospitals (usually from 12 to 24 months’ duration). Please note this pathway is NOT available to you if you have not had substantial specialist training and/or are applying for service positions which do not have a training program to meet your specific needs. 

Training can be extended in exceptional circumstances up to two years only. To do this, the employing hospital must submit a new application along with the processing fee. The College will not issue letters of support for training beyond a total of 24 months of training. 

 

What is the role of RANZCOG?

While the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) assesses the STT application and may provide a letter of support to Medical Board of Australia (MBA), it is important to note that the ultimate decision is the responsibility of the MBA. Potential applicants are advised to consider information on the MBA website prior to making an application.

RANZCOG provides formal letters of support for successful STT applicants. This letter of support is necessary for IMG doctors to obtain approval from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and for Medical Board registration. STT positions will not be approved without this letter.

Note: The College will not support a STT appointment that in any way compromises the opportunity of a FRANZCOG trainee to:
a) be appointed to the position, or
b) to engage in specific training opportunities within the workplace.


Who can apply for a STT position?


International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are eligible to apply for STT positions. Full details of the STT pathway can be found on the Medical Board of Australia website. Hospitals must first advertise the position within Australia. If no Australian candidates can be found, the hospital can recruit from abroad for the STT position. Once a suitable candidate has been employed, the hospital will then assist them to apply for the STT pathway.
 


What documents are required in a STT application to RANZCOG?
 

The hospital must submit the following documents:

  • the hospital STT Application Form A (Employer)
  • a position description
  • a detailed training program including:
    • name of approved supervisor/s
    • training timetable
    • statement indicating that the applicant will attend and participate in any appropriate professional development opportunities available within the training period
    • brief description of the objective/s of the proposed training and how the applicant’s progress/performance will be evaluated at the end   of his/her training period
  • a written statement that the appointment will not disadvantage any trainees in the College's training program
  • evidence of recruitment advertisements for the position such as newspaper, online advertisements
 
Note: Incomplete applications will not be processed until all documentation has been received. This may delay the application process.
 

The applicant must submit the following documents:

  • the candidate STT Application Form B (Employee)
  • Completed Primary Source Verification for primary medical degree and specialist degree if applicable
  • a current curriculum vitae using the format mandated by AHPRA
  • a certified copy of their primary medical degree and specialist degree if applicable
  • a current certificate of good standing (dated less than six months ago)
  • certificates of membership of appropriate medical bodies
  • a brief summary of why the applicant wishes to undertake the position
  • a statement of intention to return to country of origin on completion of training period

Applying

RANZCOG reviews the application to ensure that all required documentation has been submitted. The Chair of the RANZCOG training Accreditation Committee in the relevant state approves the application, then the Chair of the College Training and Accreditation Committee gives final authorisation. This process may take up to six weeks.
