Exceptional Circumstance, Special Consideration and Reconsideration Policy

Special Consideration on the Grounds of Exceptional Circumstances

All trainees, SIMGs and College members are subject to RANZCOG regulations and policies; individuals are, however, able to apply for variation to the normal requirements on the grounds of exceptional circumstances that may justify special consideration.

Full details, including what the College regards as valid exceptional circumstances that may lead to the granting of some form of special consideration, are set out in the Exceptional Circumstance, Special Consideration and Reconsideration Policy below.

Applications for special consideration, supported by relevant documentation, must be made on the appropriate College form, and submitted within 72 hours of the relevant event and prior to the making of any decision in relation to the College requirement in question.  An application fee is payable.

Request for Reasons

Prior to seeking reconsideration or review of a decision, the College recognises that an individual may wish to obtain clarification of the reasons for the decision and has an established process by which such requests can be made; refer to the Exceptional Circumstance, Special Consideration and Reconsideration Policy above.

Trainees are, however, advised that, in accordance with the policy, requests will not be considered where the decision in question is a ‘Fail’ or equivalent result in a College examination and feedback is provided pursuant to other College policy(ies).

Requests for reasons must be made in writing to the Chairperson of the body responsible for the original decision, within fourteen (14) days of the date of the decision in question. There is no fee payable when seeking reasons for a College decision.

Reconsideration

Where an individual considers that College policy and/or procedure was not followed in the making of the decision, or that relevant facts were not known and/or properly considered by the relevant decision-making body, they may request reconsideration of the decision.  Reconsideration will be undertaken by the body responsible for the original decision or a subgroup of that body, as deemed appropriate by the Chairperson of the body in question, in accordance with the processes set out in the Exceptional Circumstance, Special Consideration & Reconsideration Policy above.

Applications for reconsideration, supported by relevant documentation, must be submitted in writing to the relevant Chairperson within six (6) weeks of the date of the decision in question. An application fee is payable.
